How it all began

Joel Norton Coaching Client

Humble Beginnings

Since 2017, Joel has been the owner (and coach) of a private Personal Training business – originally out of Jetts Greensborough, before moving to a private facility at his residence (2019). In early 2019, Joel became an accredited Strength & Conditioning coach with ASCA (Australian Strength & Conditioning Association).

Currently expanding his thinking to learn more about; psychology, communication & business, Joel believes these areas will help him develop more meaningful & productive relationships with the adolescents and athletes he trains (as well as their parents).

Youth Coaching

From the age of 16 I have been coaching youth in some capacity. I first started in year 11 of high school when I started coaching domestic & representative basketball at Diamond Creek Basketball Club & Diamond Valley Basketball Association (DVBA) respectively (2012), to this day I still coach at DVBA. Whilst studying (2014 – 2016) I worked part time for Kelly Sports running during & after school sporting programs at local primary schools – during this time at university I had the opportunity to be a part of a Bowls program for those with Intellectual disabilities at Heatherwood Secondary School.

A Step in The Right Direction

Over the time my business (2017) has been in operation, I have built a mutually rewarding association with Monty Kids Clinic – an organization providing psychology (as well as speech & occupational therapy) services to children & adolescents. I predominantly work with adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder in a mentoring (service provider) role giving them better access to their local community – mainly, through access & usage of local health clubs (gyms) and exercise services. In 2018, I built a relationship with a company called CoHealth Reservoir (who provide housing and support for adolescents and young adults in need), providing them with much the same serivce as Monty Kids – access to exercise services and resources / knowledge regarding their physical wellbeing.

In 2019, my business began the process of growing a Junior Development (Strength & Conditioning) Program for aspiring youth athletes. The program includes athletes from multiple sports, with the level of competition ranging from; representative up to state level athletes. My aim is to teach young athletes how to apply the tools they need to optimize their preparation, performance, and recovery from sport. A key part of this program is the athlete building independence & autonomy; as over time they begin to take responsibility for their own physical & mental preparation. My role during this time is to guide the athlete as they become more & more self aware about their own physical & mental wellbeing.

In coaching, it is not just what you do that matters, rather it is how you do it which moves people.
